The Essentials Certificate

The Vision

DIF has developed its curriculum for the Essentials Certificate on the obligatory and foundational sciences in Islam. We believe that with completing our curriculum students can achieve a holistic understanding of their religion that grounds them in both theory and practice. The Essentials Certificate is a recognition for students that have successfully completed the curriculum and encourages them to pursue knowledge in the Islamic sciences at an advanced level.

To achieve certification, students must complete each of the courses as described below.

Certification by DIF will provide students with the following:

  • Study of the disciplines that are considered Obligatory (fard 'ayn) upon every Muslim to know. These disciplines encompass the minimal knowledge one needs to fulfill their obligations to God and live life according to His Sacred Law. This is based on the model provided by the famous hadith of Gabriel (upon him be peace) in which the three dimensions of the religion were delineated: islam, iman, and ihsan.
  • Study of various disciplines of the religion beyond the individual Obligations – such as hadith, the Prophetic Biography, Islamic legal theory – that will provide students with a wider and deeper understanding of the religion.

‘Aqidah (theology) is the science of the objects of faith (iman). It has been a science that has been exhausted by countless scholars over the ages.  We present the subject based on the most widely accepted principles of the rightly-guided scholars so students leave the course with a firm grasp of the essentials of this science.

Fiqh or the sacred legal rulings is the core of our sacred law or hari’ah. These rulings, based on the four accepted schools of Sacred Law, guide students on how to worship their Lord as delineated by God and His Messenger (God bless and grant him peace). Our Fiqh course covers the essentials of Purification, Prayer, Fasting, Zakat and Hajj. We offer the course based on the Hanafi, Shafi and Maliki schools of thought.

Ihsan is a science based on spiritual awareness and excellence. It is the pursuit of achieving sincerity with one’s Lord, the Most High. Our course is designed to help students to achieve this sincerity by identifying the harmful diseases (of the heart) we struggle with and practical means of curing ourselves of these ills.

Tafsir, or Qur’anic exegesis, is a science of the interpretation of the Noble Book of Allah. Our course is designed for students to re-connect with Qur’an so as to encourage a lifelong pursuit of recitation and study.

Sirah or the prophetic biography is a historical narrative of the events and life of the Prophet Muhammad. (God bless and grant him peace). This course covers the major events of his blessed life and also examines his noble characteristics and attributes so that we may increase in our love of the best of creation.

The science of Usul al-Fiqh or the foundations of Juridical Principles is a study of the defining principles upon which the Islamic legal process/rulings are attained. This course examines these legal principles to provide students with an appreciation of the process and methodology of the Islamic jurists.

Hadith or the blessed sayings and actions of our Noble Messenger (God bless and grant him peace) are the heart of this religion. Our course covers the basic methods and terminology used by scholars in the classification of Hadith and their chains of narration. Also, we cover the popular compilation, 40 Hadith of Imam Nawawi, as an introduction to appreciating the blessed wisdom of Prophet Muhammad (God bless and grant him peace).

Adab or comportment is an essential component of achieving excellence in our relationships in our practical life. Our course helps students understand the importance of manners in developing healthy relationships so we can live our lives as morally upright individuals.
